KER’s Crandell Underlines Importance of Forage for Horses

Just in time for the new year, the American Saddlebred Sport Horse Yahoo group has made up a list of 12 suggestions, somewhat aligned to the popular "Twelve Days of Christmas" song, related to improving horse health and well-being.

Each care hint came from an expert in the veterinary or horse care industry. Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., an equine nutritionist from Kentucky Equine Research (KER), was asked for her ideas on how owners could improve their understanding of feeding horses. Here's Crandell's contribution:

"While a French hen might appreciate a bed of soft hay, most horses appreciate forage as the main portion of their diet. Attention to diet is a major aspect of horse ownership, and equine nutritionist Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., from Kentucky Equine Research wished 'for owners to understand how important forage is in their horse's diet, and that the diet should be balanced relative to the forage.'"

Endurance Horse Supported by KER Supplements

Kelsey Kimbler, an endurance rider sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research (KER), will be able to claim a share of the glory when her sister McCamey is awarded the Brunjes Junior/Young Rider Trophy at the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Horse of the Year Awards gala and dinner in January.

Kelsey lent her horse HV Cimmarons Goliath to McCamey for the Spruce Woods CEIJY**, where the pair finished in first place, adding points to qualify for the prestigious award. The Brunjes Junior/Young Rider Trophy is presented to the Junior/Young Rider athlete who has earned the highest number of points on the Endurance Rider Ranking List throughout the competition year.

To perform well in endurance races, horses need to be carefully trained beforehand and also supplemented during and after the competition. To help her horse give his best effort, Kelsey trusts RiteTrac to support digestive tract health in both the foregut and hindgut as HV Cimmarons Goliath travels and competes.

She also uses Preserve PS to aid in muscle recovery after work and to assist in the prevention of tying-up and muscle soreness. Nano-E supplies natural-source vitamin E to support the horse's immune, cardiovascular, circulatory, and neuromuscular systems, and Restore SR is a slow-release electrolyte that replaces key electrolytes such as sodium and magnesium that are lost in sweat during extended performance.

KER, which is the official equine nutritionist of the USEF, provides services such as performing nutritional consultations for high-performance horses in all disciplines.

Animal Kingdom to Race, Then Enter Stud in 2013

Animal Kingdom, winner of the 2011 Kentucky Derby, will begin his breeding career at Arrowfield Stud in Australia in September of 2013. It is likely that he will shuttle to the Northern Hemisphere beginning in 2014.

Trained by Graham Motion, Animal Kingdom was the first horse to win the Derby as a first race on a natural dirt surface. He will be the first Derby winner to begin his stud career in Australia, and also the first Derby winner in more than a decade to race as a five-year-old. Plans include entry in the Grade I Turf Handicap at Gulfstream Park in February as a prep for the $10 million Dubai World Cup in March. A start at Royal Ascot in England in June is also a possibility.

Animal Kingdom was raised at Denali Stud in Versailles, Kentucky, on products manufactured by Hallway Feeds, a Team Member of Kentucky Equine Research. The horse was trained and raced on Hallway's Prep 14, a product specially formulated to support the efforts of hard-working competition horses.

In his racing career, Animal Kingdom has been a graded stakes winner on natural and synthetic surfaces and has finished either first or second in eight of his nine starts to date. He has earned well over $2 million at the track.

Sponsored Driver Temple Competes in Ridden Dressage

Shelly Temple has been driving a new pony, Hemmingway, in competitions this year. Temple and Hemi have consistently earned solid dressage scores throughout the season, and Hemi had the best overall performance in the Intermediate-level marathon at the Katydid CDE in Windsor, South Carolina in November.

As pleased as Shelly is to be showing a new pony, she hasn't forgotten her tried-and-true former driving partner, the Morgan gelding LR Ami B-Line (known as Cooper). Instead of driving, she's riding Cooper in dressage competitions. The pair recently finished well at the Viewpoint Dressage Holiday on Horse event, where they showed at second level and earned a score that will help to qualify Shelly for a United States Dressage Federation bronze medal award. She reports that Cooper, who earned driven honors such as USEF national single pony champion for 2006, 2010, and 2011 and USEF Horse of the Year combined driving single pony for 2007, is learning the dressage movements and is ready to begin schooling flying changes.

To finish out the year, Shelly said that both Cooper and Hemi will participate in a clinic with world champion Thorsten Zaremba. "We will be using the mild winter of Aiken, South Carolina, to continue the conditioning and finesse work of both Hemmingway and Cooper," she reported. "My goal is to qualify both ponies for the World Pony Championships in France in November of 2013."

Shelly is sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research. She uses products developed by KER to keep her competition ponies in top condition. She explained, "When at home, I try to keep my ponies turned out as much as possible, on a regular feeding schedule and with regular work routines. When competition season begins, with constant travel, irregular or no turnout, and changing feed and work schedules, RiteTrac keeps their digestive systems working as they should. It's a regular part of our program to keep the horses performing and feeling their best!"

When top Thoroughbred trainer Bob Baffert saddled four of the five starters in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes, he knew several of his horses would finish in the money. As it turned out, his equine charges finished one-two-three-four in the race.

Really Mr Greely, the winner, went off at 11-1 odds and led from gate to wire. Half a length back at the finish was Super Ninety Nine. Shakin It Up finished in third place ahead of Baffert's fourth entry, Z Big Apple.

Really Mr Greely's earnings rose to $85,620 with the win. Baffert-trained horses have won the Hollywood Prevue Stakes five times before, including last year's race when So Brilliant claimed the victory.

TEVA Hosts Student Day

The Texas Equine Veterinary Association held its first TEVA Student Day in mid-November.

Students who participated were accompanied by veterinarians who provided commentary during visits to a number of state-of-the-art veterinary hospitals and practitioners around the state. At each destination, the students were given tours of the facility including educational demonstrations specific to each clinic's specialty. The schedule allowed the students to become acquainted with practicing veterinarians and clinics and provided an introduction to internship and externship opportunities.

Barrett Wins Adelaide International Four-Star Event

Congratulations to NSW rider Craig Barrett, who won the 2012 CCI**** HSBC FEI Classics Australian International Three-Day Event (AI3DE) in front of a sellout crowd at Adelaide's Victoria Park. This was Barrett's first win at this level and only the second time he has entered the four-star event.

Barrett and his 10-year-old Thoroughbred mare Sandhills Brillaire were in fifth place after the dressage phase. A cross-country round with no jumping penalties and only 0.8 time penalties allowed the pair to go into the show jumping phase with a two-rail buffer. Their advantage was extended to four rails after second-place combination Natalie Blundell and Algebra incurred two rails down. The pair went on to produce a near faultless show jumping round and were unfortunate to knock down the final rail.

To keep his eventing horses in good health, Barrett feeds KERx EO-3 to provide long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.

The Adelaide International Three-Day Event is the second leg of the 2012/2012 FEI Classics, a six-event competition made up of the world's only four-star eventing competitions. The AI3DE is the only four-star event in the Southern Hemisphere.

USHJA Emerging Athletes Program

At the mid-November United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) Emerging Athletes National Training Session, Stephen Foran emerged as the top rider and won a spot at the George H. Morris Horsemastership Training Session to be held in Wellington, Florida, in January.

The Emerging Athletes Program (EAP) training session was part of a summer agenda in which more than 200 riders applied for regional clinics around the country. From this group, 16 finalists qualified for the EAP National Training Session. After several days in which participants were trained and tested on various phases of equestrian knowledge, Foran was one of four finalists selected to jump a course on horses assigned from a pool of mounts unfamiliar to the riders. For his accomplishment, Foran received a $3,000 training grant for future instruction and a $1,500 gift certificate from Dover Saddlery.

The finalists were judged not only on their riding ability but also on their hands-on horsemanship skills in the barn and in the ring. Scores on a written examination were considered in the selection process. EAP committee members and clinicians watched the riders and met daily to evaluate their riding skills, knowledge and understanding of their horses, performance under pressure, and teamwork.

Students in the Equine Scholars program at Georgetown College visited Kentucky Equine Research (KER) to learn about the company's studies in the fields of nutrition and exercise physiology.

Accompanied by their instructor, Elissa Baertschi, the students watched a horse exercising on the high-speed treadmill and learned how digestibility trials and standard exercise tests are planned and conducted.

KER staff members Eileen Phethean and Jen Hall explained how the results of these projects are used by the professionals at KER to design feed products and nutritional supplements.

U.S. Jumping Team Wins FEI Nations Cup

Even with a rain delay that pushed the FEI Nations Cup competition back 24 hours, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) jumping team wasted no time in getting excellent performances from their horses and winning the CSIOW Buenos Aires competition in Argentina. With their fast and careful rides, the four team members put the U.S. solidly in the lead and maintained the position until the final results were tallied.

Charlie Jacobs started off with Deeridge Farms' Leap of Joy, an 11-year-old Holsteiner gelding, completed two rounds with no faults.

Another team rider, Quentin Judge, guided Double H Farm's HH Carotino to a clear first round and picked up only four faults in the second round. HH Carotino is a 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding.

In her first effort as a member of the U.S. senior team, Catherine Pasmore rode Pasmore Stables' eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare Z Canta. The pair collected 12 faults in the first round but had a clear second round.

The last team member, Alison Robitaille on Cover Girl 27, posted another clear round for the U.S.

A second round was not necessary for Robitaille and Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Firestone's eight-year-old Wurttemberger mare as the U.S. could not be beaten at this point. Teams from Canada and Argentina tied for second place.

The FEI standings are based on results from each rider's competitions, from which Nicholson has earned over 60 more points than the second-ranked rider.

Besides bringing home a bronze medal from the Olympic Games in London, Nicholson has finished in first place in a number of top-level events this year. Most recently, he rode Nereo to first place at the Pau CCI**** event in France. He claimed seventh place with Mr. Cruise Control in the same division, where more than half of the 63 starting horses failed to finish. Earlier in the year, Nicholson won the Barbury Castle Horse Trials and the Burghley Horse Trials with Avebury. He also rode Quimbo to wins at the Boekelo and Blenheim events this fall.

KER Supports International Racehorses at Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival

The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is one of the world's leading racing carnivals. Each year it attracts over 20 international racehorses that fly in with the aim of sharing in the rich prize money offered at the carnival. The biggest race, the 3200m Group 1 Melbourne Cup, is now worth AU $6 million, which is over $6 million US.

Most of these horses come from Europe and must endure a change of season, a very long flight to Melbourne that poses a risk of travel sickness, a change of training environment, and feed switchovers. Australia has very strict quarantine regulations under which hay can't be imported at all, and prepared feeds can be imported only if they are irradiated to kill weed seeds. The prepared feeds the horses are fed in England, Ireland, and France are not available in Australia, so horses must be fed a locally made feed or an imported irradiated feed, which often has reduced palatability.

While there are some similarities between a racing feed in England and one is Australia, there are some different ingredients used, so it's not just a matter of picking a feed off the shelf and feeding it, as this would involve more change than is good for a racehorse preparing for competition.

Over the years, many horses have had problems with appetite after the long trip south, and this has affected their preparation for the races they have come so far to enter.

But the combination of Kentucky Equine Research's (KER) nutritional expertise and the relationship our Team Member, Saracen Horse Feeds, has with trainers in England has provided many solutions in 2012.

Saracen's Thoroughbred director, Polly Bonnor, liaised with Peter Huntington, director of nutrition at KER Australasia, about types of hay available and feeds that could be custom made in Australia. She then advised trainers in England who had horses coming down about modifications to regular feeding programs, so they could be duplicated in Australia with minimal change.

Laboratory analysis of hay and oats was done so that feeds of similar nutrient content would be fed in both places. This involved a switch from timothy hay to rye grass hay before travel, as timothy is not grown in Australia. Custom sweet feeds were made in England and in Australia so that ingredients and nutrient contents were duplicated and horses were fed fresh, highly palatable feed. After the horses arrived, Huntington provided technical advice to trainers about implementing the new feed programs while the horses continued in full training at the quarantine center.

The results have so far been excellent, with horses adapting well to the new feeds and eating heartily. Racing results will be revealed over the next few weeks, but international horses fed by KER will at least have a full fuel tank.

Gorder Joins Trainer Panel at Racehorse Welfare Summit

Kellyn Gorder, a Thoroughbred trainer who has started and developed numerous successful horses including a Kentucky Derby winner, served on a panel of experienced trainers at the Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit held in Lexington, Kentucky.

Members of the panel contributed to a discussion on horsemanship and training techniques, answering questions about the level of knowledge required to handle and manage racehorses that are being prepared to compete.

Newspaper articles, blog posts, and other media features have questioned whether horse trainers have the knowledge and experience to evaluate equipment, veterinary procedures, medications, and fitness levels of their equine charges. The panel discussion allowed successful trainers to detail the preparation necessary to make the decisions that will keep a horse sound, healthy, and able to progress through the steps leading to a racing start.

To support the well-being of horses in his training stable, Gorder chooses feed products manufactured by Hallway Feeds, a Team Member of Kentucky Equine Research (KER). He also trusts Synovate HA, a high-quality liquid hyaluronic acid product developed by KER, to provide the necessary joint lubrication for the Thoroughbreds in his care.

Water-Dispersible Vitamin E Shows Superior Bioavailability for Horses

In a presentation at the Australian Equine Science Symposium, researchers reported on the effect of supplementing horses that were deficient in vitamin E with a water-dispersible natural-source alpha-tocopherol product. This project was a cooperative effort between the University of Minnesota Equine Center and Kentucky Equine Research.

Vitamin E is important in equine nutrition because it functions as an antioxidant, neutralizing the production of free radicals and helping to maintain normal neuromuscular function. Horses with a deficiency of vitamin E may show impaired nerve function, weakness of muscle fibers, and loss of coordination. Vitamin E supplementation is often used to treat these signs, and is also used to treat some types of tying-up and nervous diseases.

Various types and amounts of vitamin E have been given to horses, but figuring the best dosage has been difficult because there is a wide range of potency and bioavailability among different sources. Previous studies have shown that bioavailability is lower with synthetic forms of vitamin E and greater with water dispersible natural vitamin E sources. Cerebrospinal fluid levels of vitamin E have followed the same pattern.

Five mature Quarter Horses selected on the basis of their low serum vitamin E levels were used to test the effect of water-dispersible vitamin E supplementation on serum and muscle alpha-tocopherol. The horses did not show signs of neuromuscular disease even though they were judged to be deficient in this nutrient. The horses were exercised on a treadmill for 20 minutes a day for five days each week and were fed grass hay at 1.5% of body weight and 2 kg (4.4 lb) of sweet feed each day. The horses were supplemented with 5,000 IU of nanodispersed natural alpha-tocopherol five days each week.

At the beginning of the study and again on the last day of the trial, blood samples were taken from each horse as well as tissue samples from the gluteus medius muscle. The samples were analyzed for alpha-tocopherol level and results showed a twofold increase in serum and more than a threefold increase in muscle tissue after supplementation. As shown by this study, water-dispersible natural-source vitamin E supplementation is useful in increasing levels of vitamin E in blood and muscle in deficient horses.

Dutton Collects Ribbons at Fair Hill CCI

At the Dansko-Fair Hill International CCI in Elkton, Maryland, KER-sponsored rider Phillip Dutton competed against some of the best riders in the country and ended up high in the standings in two divisions.

Dutton rode Fernhill Fugitive in the CCI** competition, finishing dressage in seventh place. A good cross-country round moved him into third after that phase, but a single rail down in the stadium phase pushed him into seventh place at the end of the day. In a field of 63 riders, with 51 receiving a final score, this is a respectable finish in a top international competition.

Dutton's entry in the CIC*** division, Fernhill Eagle, was eleventh after dressage but moved up to third among 34 entries after cross-country. Of the 22 who finished the event, Dutton and Fernhill Eagle ended up in third place.

Sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research, Dutton uses RiteTrac to support digestive tract health in his competition horses. The stress of travel, training, and competition can disrupt a horse's digestive system and lead to colic, gastric ulcers, and hindgut acidosis. The proprietary blend of ingredients in RiteTrac is designed to support total digestive tract health in hard-working horses.

Sponsored Drivers Bring Home the Blue at the Kentucky Classic CDE

At the Kentucky Classic CDE held in early October at the Kentucky Horse Park, Shelly Temple drove Hemmingway to a first-place finish in the Preliminary Single Pony division.

In a field of nine competitors, Shelly had first place in dressage, third in marathon, and second in cones and was awarded the overall win. Hemmingway, who is owned by Irene Gillis, is a new pony for Shelly and has performed well this fall in spite of being driven as a single pony, a change from his previous position in a pair. Shelly is sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research (KER), and Hemmingway is fueled by feeds formulated by KER.

Hemmingway's preparation for the October shows has consisted of endurance and cardio work. In addition, developing softness, relaxation, and confidence are all part of his daily training sessions, according to Jeff Legg of Catalyst Driving Center. He commented, "KER's supplements are an important part of the maintenance of Catalyst Driving's horses and ponies. With KER's scientifically formulated feeds, Shelly rests assured that Hemmingway will receive the promoted benefits."

KER-sponsored driver Chester Weber was also a winner at the Kentucky Classic CDE. In the Advanced Horse Team division, Chester finished more than 100 points ahead of the second-place driver. His Warmblood horses Senate, Boy, Boris, Ringo, and Splash gave their customary outstanding efforts that have helped to maintain Chester's achievement of eight USEF National Four-In-Hand Championships.

Among the KER products that keep Weber's horses in top condition are Restore, an electrolyte supplement designed to match the composition of sweat, and Nano-E, a natural vitamin E source to support immune, cardiovascular, circulatory, neuromuscular, and reproductive functions.

Recent Success for Yearlings Sold by KER-Fed Mill Park Stud

Three horses sold as yearlings by Mill Park Stud had success in Victoria over the weekend, and all were out of the Group III-winning mare Dane Belltar.

Tanby, which was Dane Belltar's first foal, won the Listed VRC The Bart Cummings over 2520m at Flemington on Saturday, and Fawkner, the mare's second foal, won the last race at this meet, the Listed VRC Headquarters Tavern Stakes over 1410m.

A $120,000 Inglis Easter purchase by Red Ransom (USA), Viking Star won the opening race at Morphetville, the SAJC Centrebet Handicap over 1300m for three-year-olds.

Tanby's strong win may have increased his chances of lining up for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. Fawkner was a $70,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the Mill Park draft, and the five-year-old son of Reset has notched up $350,000 for his connections, thanks to seven wins and three placings from 13 career starts.

It was an amazing achievement of Dane Belltar to produce three high-class gallopers from her first four foals and for all of them to win on the same day in quality races.

Mill Park Thoroughbreds are fed the Kentucky Equine Research (KER) products All-Phase and Equi-Jewel to ensure optimum growth and development. The farm also uses Cool Command from KER Team Member Barastoc during yearling preparation.

Thoroughbred Trainer Gorder Began With Basics

Kellyn Gorder has been training Thoroughbred racehorses for five years, but his experience with the sport is much older than that. Gorder has a long history of introducing young horses to the many new things they will learn as racetrack hopefuls. Beginning with long yearlings and continuing into the beginning of a horse's two-year-old season, these early steps--wearing a saddle and bridle, bearing the weight of a rider, walking calmly out under tack--form the foundation on which every Thoroughbred's racing career is built.

Gorder has started a number of young horses, many of which went on to successful careers at the racetrack. Some of his most memorable pupils are Well Armed, winner of the 2009 Dubai World Cup; Super Saver, winner of the 2010 Kentucky Derby; and Drosselmeyer, winner of the 2010 Belmont Stakes and the 2011 Breeders' Cup Classic.

When he first expanded his responsibilities and began prepping horses for races, Gorder had just five Thoroughbreds in his care. This number has continued to expand until he now has a training stable of about 50 horses. He plans each horse's workouts and oversees feeding and health management, supporting joint health and function by supplementing his equine charges with Synovate HA. Developed by Kentucky Equine Research, this product contains hyaluronic acid (HA) that contributes significantly to maintenance of cartilage health and elasticity, joint fluid viscoelasticity, and lubrication of joints. In addition, HA has anti-inflammatory properties that are especially useful for high-motion joints such as those in equine limbs.

Coulter Rides to Double Championships

Lisa Coulter, a reiner sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research (KER), was pleased with the efforts of her horses at the High Roller Reining Classic recently held in Las Vegas. Coulter rode Whiz It A Chic in the Derby competition, claiming champion at Level 1 and reserve champion at Level 2. On Yellow Jersey, Coulter finished as champion in the Level 2 Maturity competition and reserve champion at Level 3. An understated quote from Coulter: "Needless to say, it was a very successful show!"

Coulter is working to prepare her horses for upcoming shows. Her stable includes a new three-year-old that is being readied for the futurity competitions later in the fall. She commented, "The horses look and feel great! They are still on Synovate HA and EO-3."

KER's nutritional supplements such as Synovate HA and EO-3 are designed to help athletic horses perform to their maximum ability. With the spins, stops, and lead changes required in reining, horses need to maintain joint health as they train and compete. The hyaluronic acid in Synovate HA plays a vital role in maintaining the health of connective tissue and optimizing normal joint function. EO-3 supplies omega-3 fatty acids, compounds that work to minimize numerous inflammatory conditions in horses.

Sponsored Riders Find Success at Plantation Field International Horse Trial

Riders sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research (KER) had a great weekend at Plantation Field International Horse Trials in Unionville, Pennsylvania. Phillip Dutton and Karen O'Connor had 12 horses entered between them in eight divisions throughout the weekend.

In the CIC*** competition, the most demanding level for horses and riders, Dutton and O'Connor piloted four horses to top-ten finishes in a field of 37 entrants. O'Connor claimed second place with Mandiba and sixth place with Veronica, while Dutton collected seventh-place honors on Mighty Nice and was ninth on Fernhill Eagle.

The CIC** division, only slightly less difficult, ended with Dutton claiming seventh place out of 43 entries on Fernhill Fugitive. Dutton was in eleventh place after dressage but managed to move up in the standings with minimal time penalties for cross-country and a clear stadium round.

Dutton also finished in first place on Santa's Playboy in the Intermediate B division; second on Kilkenny in Preliminary Horse; third on Powderhound in Open Intermediate A; fourth on Fernhill Solar in Open Preliminary; and fifth on Atlas in Advanced.

To support the athletic efforts of her competition horses, O'Connor uses KER products such as Restore and EO-3. Restore is an electrolyte supplement designed to match the composition of sweat. The product also includes a buffering agent designed to support gastrointestinal comfort in horses performing strenuous exercise. EO-3 supplies omega-3 fatty acids, substances that tend to minimize inflammatory conditions in horses.

Dutton uses RiteTrac, a product designed to support total digestive tract health. The proprietary blend of ingredients in RiteTrac neutralizes excess gastric acid, protecting the stomach lining, and also contains a time-released hindgut buffer designed to act on the cecum and colon to minimize the effects of subclinical hindgut acidosis.

Filly Wins for Gorder

Thoroughbred trainer Kellyn Gorder scored a win with the four-year-old filly Maid of Heaven in the Ladies Marathon, a mile and five-sixteenths race at Kentucky Downs.

In the field of seven, Maid of Heaven broke well and ran in third place for the first half of the race. She dropped to the back of the pack at the end of the backstretch and then made her way through the other horses to emerge in second place at the top of the home stretch. Maid of Heaven and the eventual second-place horse Charming She Is traded the lead several times before Maid of Heaven stuck her nose in front for the win.

Gorder uses Synovate HA, a joint support supplement distributed by Kentucky Equine Research, to help his Thoroughbred charges maintain joint lubrication as they train and race.

South Korean Videographers Record Documentary Footage at KER

A professional film crew from South Korea's Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) spent a day at the Kentucky Equine Research (KER) facility in mid-September. The videographers were filming footage for a documentary about the relationship between humans and horses.

Thomas Park, who worked with the film crew and served as an interpreter, said, "In South Korea, most people see horses as an instrument of gambling, such as in horse racing. Our crew is trying to change people's view on horses, not only as animals with strength and speed, which can lead to winning money, but as animals that help the human race in many different ways."

The videographers spent several hours in the main research barn where they filmed horses exercising on KER's high-speed equine treadmill. The horses were fitted with oxygen-sensing equipment for part of the exercise session so that oxygen consumption and exhaled gases could be measured. Data collected with this equipment can indicate a horse's level of fitness and fatigue during exercise, parameters that can be influenced by diet and other management factors.

To cover various aspects of the research being conducted at KER, the crew recorded other procedures such as horses exercising on the walker, technicians performing laboratory tests, and interns fitting horses with harnesses for the collection of urine and feces. A rider, complete with helmet-cam, was filmed as she guided one of KER's sport horses around a course of stadium jumps. Company president and founder Joe Pagan, Ph.D., and veterinarian Bryan Waldridge were interviewed as they explained the roles they play in the firm's operation.

During their visit to Kentucky, members of the MBC crew filmed at several other locations including the Kentucky Horse Park, the Keeneland horse sales pavilion, and Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. An additional stop at Hallway Feeds in Lexington allowed the team to interview Lee Hall, vice-president of Hallway Feeds. Hallway, a Team Member of Kentucky Equine Research, is in its fifth decade of manufacturing animal feed products.

MBC is one of the four largest television and radio networks in South Korea and has been established longer than any of the country's other commercial broadcasting networks.
