Nutritional Management of Horses with Liver Disease

A recent edition of Feedstuffs features an article written by Bryan Waldridge, D.V.M., a staff veterinarian at Kentucky Equine Research (KER). The article, which appeared in the August 30, 2010 issue, addresses the nutritional management of horses with liver disease.

The complete article, titled "Targeted Diets Can Aid Horses with Liver Disease," features an overview of hepatic disease in horses as well as feeding recommendations.

Joe Pagan, Ph.D., founder and president of KER, has provided articles for Feedstuffs for several years. He has written on diverse topics related to equine nutrition: feeding strategies for metabolic conditions, water quality and consumption, hindgut acidosis, buffering capacity of forages, colic, and omega-3 fatty acids, just to name a few. A complete list of Pagan's contributions to the magazine is contained elsewhere on this website.

Feedstuffs is a weekly newspaper serving agribusiness decision-makers involved in the manufacture, production, and distribution of agricultural products and services. For over 80 years, Feedstuffs has been providing news, information, and analysis on areas directly related to food production, including the related areas of feed manufacturing, animal health and nutrition, industry trends, feed ingredients, government regulations and marketing.

Saracen Feeds Another Sales-Topping Yearling

Saracen Horse Feeds has done it again! The only Kentucky Equine Research (KER) Team Member in England fed the sales-topping yearling at this year's St. Leger Yearling Sale in Doncaster. The filly was owned and sale-prepped by Laundry Cottage Stud and consigned to the sale by Furnace Mill Stud; both farms are clients of Saracen. The filly sold for £120,000, a sales price that was matched by two colts but not exceeded by any other consignment.

Another point of interest: Saracen-fed horses had a significantly better average when compared with the average price achieved by the yearlings fed by other feed manufacturers in the United Kingdom.

To learn more about Saracen, check out the latest issue of Equinews, the official quarterly publication of KER. An article titled "Saracen Horse Feeds at the Sales" tracts the company's success in feeding outstanding sale horses over the last decade.

Dutton and O'Connor Finish Well at Richland Park

At the Richland Park Horse Trials, Phillip Dutton finished as reserve champion out of thirty-two entries in the CIC two-star division aboard Why Not. Dutton rode an excellent dressage test that put him in second place after the first day. After adding minimal time penalties on the cross-country course, he produced a double-clear stadium round to maintain his second place standing. Riding Mandiba, Karen O'Connor claimed a third-place finish in the CIC three-star division. In a highly competitive field where less than five points separated the top five riders, O'Connor had no jumping faults and collected only 2.4 time faults in cross-country before executing a perfect stadium round. Both Dutton and O'Connor are sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research and Pennfield Feeds, a KER Team Member.

RiteTrac Instrumental in Gastrointestinal Health

Three horses recently underwent gastroscopy to ascertain stomach health. Brief descriptions of the three horses, all with a different history of RiteTrac administration, follow:

Horse 1: 10-year-old Thoroughbred gelding in light  training that competes occasionally but travels several times a month; diet  includes a well-fortified grain mixture, alfalfa-grass hay, and free-choice pasture;  never given RiteTrac; somewhat nervous by nature and oftentimes cranky;

Horse 2: 6-year-old Thoroughbred gelding in light training; diet includes a well-fortified, high-fat, high-fiber grain mix, a balancer pellet, and free-choice access to good-quality pasture; given RiteTrac once daily when cribbing frequency increased; and

Horse 3: 11-year-old Thoroughbred gelding in heavy training, ridden six to seven times weekly; diet includes a well-fortified, high-fat, high-fiber concentrate, free-choice grass hay; given RiteTrac as indicated on the label, twice daily mixed thoroughly in a grain meal; during stressful times, he tends to lose his appetite and fret.

Gastroscopy results indicated diverse gastric environments.

Interior view of a horse's stomach.

Horse 1, the gelding that had received no RiteTrac whatsoever, was diagnosed with roughened gastric tissue and small pinpoint lesions that ran the entire length of the lesser curvature of the stomach. No healing lesions were noted. (See a detailed diagram of the equine stomach.)

Horse 2, the gelding that had been placed on RiteTrac a few weeks prior to gastroscopy, was also diagnosed with roughened margins and minute lesions along the length of the margo plicatus. Hyperkeratosis (thickening of tissue) and a moderate-sized healing ulcer were also noted along the greater curvature of the stomach.

Horse 3, the gelding that had received RiteTrac as indicated for a several months, had the healthiest stomach environment. Though there was evidence of healed ulcers, there was no active disease and no noteworthy lesions.

RiteTrac provides total-tract support for horses involved in all disciplines. RiteTrac is one product in the KERx range of nutritional supplements.

Optimal Nutrition Fuels Top Ponies

Diminutive equines took center stage at the 2010 United States Equestrian Federation Pony Finals National Championships, held recently at the Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, Ky.

Ponies compete in hunter and jumper divisions at the Pony Finals National Championships.

Championships in six hunter divisions (green and regular) were bestowed to ponies in three height categories: small (not to exceed 12.2 hands), medium (over 12.2 and not to exceed 13.2 hands) and large (over 13.2 and not to exceed 14.2 hands). In addition to hunters, pony jumpers vied for a national championship, and riders from across the country tested their riding skills in the EquiSport Insurance/USEF Pony Medal Finals.

More information on the competition can be found on the USEF website.

Ponies are notoriously easy keepers. Ever wonder how horsemen keep hunter ponies in top competition weight? Kentucky Equine Research (KER) went straight to the source. As part of a larger survey of feeding management practices of sport horses, KER nutritionists polled the owners and trainers of ponies to see exactly what they were being fed. The results of the survey are included in a paper titled "Feeding Horses at the Winter Equestrian Festival: A Review of Common Practices," featured in the proceedings of the 2010 KER Nutrition Conference, Feeding and Veterinary Management of the Sport Horse.

KER Feeds Youth Olympic Horses

The 38 Australian horses taking part in the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will have a place in history as the first equine athletes to participate in this new global effort to introduce young people to the Olympic values.

Australia's Glen Haven Park was charged with recruiting and training the horses for the event, which will include individual and team jumping competitions. The competitors select the horse on which they'll compete through a random draw. See a video of the horses arriving and settling in to the Singapore Turf Club Riding Centre.

Kentucky Equine Research Team Member, Barastoc (Ridley Agriproducts) is the official feed supplier for these horses for the 12 months leading up to and during the event. The horses receive nutritionally balanced diets with Barastoc feeds and KER supplements to bring out the best in each horse.

KER has worked closely with the trainers and staff at Glen Haven Park to ensure that the transition of horses from Queensland, Australia to Singapore has been as seamless as possible. The horses have been gradually acclimatized during their 12 months of training in lead-up to the games. Their diet and condition been carefully monitored throughout each stage of their preparation. These diets include:

With little time between the horses' arrival and return to peak competition fitness it has been imperative that everything, from the hay and water was taken with them whilst in transit to ensuring that their usual feed and supplements were at the venue for when they landed, to make sure the journey has been as stress free as possible. All the horses travelled extremely well and landed in excellent condition and have since begun their rigorous training schedule in lead-up to this week's competition.

O'Connor Event Team Preparing for WEG

Olympian Karen O'Connor has set her sights on this fall's Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, reports veteran groom Max Corcoran. O'Connor, who is sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research (KER), holds one of 16 spots on the 2010 Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team Short List with longtime mount and Olympic partner Mandiba.

Their next steps in qualifying for WEG will include dressage training with Oded Shimoni and competing in jumper classes at the HITS Culpeper Spring & Summer Show Series. Their next event will be the Richland Park Horse Trials in late August, before heading to the official selection trials, the Land Rover/USEA American Eventing Championships at Chattahoochee Hills.

Corcoran is responsible for O'Connor's top horses, and works with Karen and consultants at KER to assess each horse's different nutritional needs. Each one has to be catered to differently in order to perform its best.

"The most important elements leading up to a competition are overall health of the horse, starting with nutrition," Corcoran said. "Without proper nutrition you cannot have a healthy horse and a healthy horse is a sound horse. My priorities until that time are fitness and soundness as well."

KER products used by O'Connor team include EquiShure, Restore, DuraPlex, Nano•E, Triad, Bio-Bloom, and Hemabuild, while feed is provided by KER Team Member Pennfield Equine Feed Technologies.

New Issue of Equinews Available Online

The most recent issue of Equinews, the official health and nutrition publication of Kentucky Equine Research (KER), is now available online.

One highlight of the summer issue is a synopsis of muscular problems that affect horses and nutritional recommendations designed to manage horses with these myopathies. Much of the information in the article, titled "Current Diagnosis and Nutritional Management of Tying-Up," was gleaned from a paper Stephanie Valberg, D.V.M., Ph.D., presented at the 2010 KER Nutrition Conference in April. The complete paper is also available on ker.com.

In addition, the current issue contains several articles that underscore the scope of KER's success in formulating feeds appropriate for two very different groups of equine athletes--racehorses and three-day eventers. KER Team Members Hallway Feeds, Pennfield Feed Technologies, and Saracen Horse Feeds manufacture the KER-formulated feeds referred to in these articles:

"Saracen Horse Feeds at the Sales"

"Rolex Three-Day Event Showcases Elite Riders"

Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., one of KER's staff nutritionists, also responds to a case report involving a Thoroughbred mare with lactation tetany or hypocalcemia.

The next issue of Equinews will be available online this fall. Look for it in October!

Hallway Feeds in the Winner's Circle

From Saratoga Race Course to Del Mar, Kentucky Equine Research (KER) Team Member Hallway Feeds fed some of the most successful racehorses last weekend.

Blame, who was born and raised and is trained on Hallway Feeds, battled favorite Quality Road for the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes win. Because the Whitney Stakes is a "win-and-you're-in" race, Blame is now qualified to enter this year's Breeders' Cup Classic. Trainer Al Stall, Jr. said the horse's next start will likely be the October 2 Jockey Club Gold Cup.

On the West Coast, Zenyatta extended her winning streak to a remarkable 18 with a victory in the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch Stakes. The 6-year-old mare, also fed by Hallway Feeds, is aiming to repeat her victory in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic.

Crandell Wins Second Tevis Cup

John Crandell and Heraldic earned their second Tevis Cup victory on July 26, 2010.

Considered the most arduous endurance race in the world, the Tevis Cup is contested over 100 miles of rugged California trail.

In addition to grueling terrain, the scorching heat offered challenges this year. Temperatures soared into the 90s, and this single factor caused many of the horse-and-rider teams to go slower than normal or retire. Fewer than half of the starters finished the trek.

LR Bold Greyson, ridden by Shannon Constanti, finished in second place. The Crandell family of Star Tanney, Va., owns both Heraldic and LR Bold Greyson, a homebred. Crandell and Constanti finished two hours in front of the other competitors.

Crandell uses several KER-formulated products to produce winning results including Preserve and Hemabuild. In addition, he also uses the KERx Wellness Supplement specifically designed by KER nutritionists. Crandell is brother-in-law to Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D., a KER nutritionist based in Virginia and an endurance enthusiast.

Kathleen Crandell has spoken extensively on feeding and managing elite endurance horses, most recently at this year's KER Nutrition Conference, where she presented the paper "Observations and Recommendations for Feeding the Endurance Horse."

Horse Body Condition Score Chart Available

Seeing the general difference between a fat horse and a thin horse is simple, but when trying to monitor subtle changes in a horse's condition, a body condition score chart can be a valuable tool.

A body condition score chart illustrates the Henneke Scale, which uses numbers 1-9 to objectively rate a horse's overall body condition. A horse with a body condition score of 1 is considered poor or emaciated, while a horse with a body condition score of 9 is extremely fat. Healthy horses have a body condition score from 4-7.

A free downloadable horse body condition score chart is now available from Kentucky Equine Research (KER).

The chart details the key areas to monitor to determine your horse's condition: thickening of the neck, fat covering the withers, fat deposits along backbone, fat deposits on flanks, fat deposits on inner thighs, fat deposits around tailhead, fat deposits behind shoulders, fat covering ribs, and how the shoulder blends into the neck. Example illustrations are included.

The chart is available in two options:

Low-resolution for online use

High-resolution for print use

Snow Fairy Wins Irish Oaks

Snow Fairy completed a Classic Epsom/Curragh double through her winning performance in Sunday's Irish Oaks, becoming only the 13th filly in history to win both events. Victorious by a margin of eight lengths, the 3-year-old filly might be destined for the Breeders' Cup later this season.

Notes from The Curragh indicate Snow Fairy, "opened up a gap on her pursuers in a matter of strides, continuing to pull away all the way to the line."

Of the Irish Oaks performance, Trainer Ed Dunlop noted, "She won really well and is a filly with a huge heart."

Dunlop followed the same path with Ouija Board in 2004, culminating in a career that included seven Group 1 wins, among them the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Snow Fairy's performance was fueled by Saracen Horse Feeds, a Kentucky Equine Research (KER) Team Member based in England.

With the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games approaching, the race is on to see which riders, drivers, and vaulters will represent the United States for the eight World Championship titles to be contested in Lexington.

The selection process is ongoing, but several of the equestrians sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research (KER) are in contention.

KER riders have made a big impact on selectors in the sport of eventing. Phillip Dutton holds five of the 18 spots with horses Connaught, Kheops du Quesnay, The Foreman, Truluck, and Woodburn. Karen O'Connor and Mandiba have also been named to the short list for consideration. All short-listed horse/rider combinations must participate in the Land Rover 2010 USEA American Eventing Championships for final selection. This event will take place September 9-12, 2010, in Fairburn, Georgia.

In the sport of combined driving, KER equestrian Chester Weber is among 10 drivers named to the nominated entry for WEG. From this group the definite entry (team and Individuals) will be named to represent the United States in the Four-in-Hand Driving Championships.

Sponsored rider Mary Jordan also finished in the Top 10 at the selection trials for para-equestrian dressage, riding her own homebred mare Paxton Abbey.

Starspangledbanner Wins July Cup at Newmarket

Boosting his record to 7 wins in 15 starts, Australian-bred Starspangledbanner claimed victory in the July Cup (Group 1) at Newmarket in England. Running no worse than second throughout the race, Starspangledbanner overtook Equiano late in the uphill stretch run to finish in first place by a neck. Taking the third spot was another Australian-bred horse, the seven-year-old mare Alverta.

Kentucky Equine Research (KER) Australasia formulated the feed products on which both Alverta and Starspangledbanner, a four-year-old colt, were reared. Starspangledbanner spent his growing years at Makybe Stud in Victoria, while Alverta was produced by Arrowfield Stud in New South Wales. The products are manufactured and distributed by Ridley Agriproducts, a KER Team Member.

The win was the second for Starspangledbanner in the Global Sprint Challenge following his victory in the Oakleigh Plate earlier in the year.

Guidelines for Refeeding Malnourished Horses Released

The Equine Health and Welfare Alliance (EHWA) and Kentucky Equine Research (KER) have teamed up to create comprehensive guidelines for the management of nutritionally neglected horses.

Assembled by the head research veterinarian and nutritionists at KER, the guidelines feature the nuts and bolts of restorative nutrition, specifically how best to feed horses safely for the first two weeks of rehabilitation. Titled "Refeeding Starved or Malnourished Horses," the guidelines contain a convenient, easy-to-read chart that can be posted in the barn for quick reference.

"Everyone in the equine industry should be concerned about unwanted or neglected horses," said Bryan Waldridge, DVM, Dipl. ABVP, ACVIM, head veterinarian at KER's research farm. "The recommendations produced through the partnership of EHWA and KER will serve as a guide for individuals and humane groups that want to rehabilitate malnourished horses. It is our hope that no horse will suffer from lack of feed, but because some do, we can provide nutritional advice to those who come to the aid of those horses in need."

The goal of the EHWA is to develop and maintain a comprehensive network of education, research, and support for the basic needs of all equines that allows them a life of dignity. The EHWA has a core membership of veterinarians, but membership is not limited to veterinarians, and all equine organizations, supporters, owners, and enthusiasts are encouraged to join. To learn more about EHWA, visit the organization's website at www.equinehealthandwelfare.org.

KER Nutritionist Set to Speak at Asian-Australasian Conference

Peter Huntington, BVSc, Director of Nutrition for KER Australasia, is scheduled to speak at the 14th Animal Science Congress of the Asian-Australasian Association of Animal Production (AAAP) Societies, August 23-27, in Pingtung, Taiwan, Republic of China.

The theme of this year's Congress is helping farmers produce high-quality animal products using environment-friendly management practices and appropriate animal welfare protocols. Huntington will speak about two management issues: the importance of forages in equine diets and the obstacles that face nutritionists and veterinarians in creating rations for metabolically challenged horses such as those with Cushing's disease or equine metabolic syndrome.

"In recent years, this conference has been a popular gathering place for producers and researchers, with more than 1,000 people in attendance. I think the focus of this year's conference is compelling and certainly timely, and I am happy to be representing KER at this event," said Huntington.

The Congress provides a forum for presentation and discussion of the most recent developments and advancements in the field of animal production with representation from many disciplines.

Impact of Equine Diseases Focus of National Forum

Infectious diseases and their impact on horse welfare and the horse industry were the focus of this year's National Issues Forum, co-hosted by the American Horse Council (AHC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS), June 20-23.

The forum provided an opportunity for the horse industry, key federal and state authorities, and others to discuss how each sector can protect the health of the country's horses and the commercial viability of the industry in the face of emerging and re-emerging diseases.

Recent outbreaks of contagious equine metritis, equine piroplasmosis, vesicular stomatitis, equine herpesvirus (EHM), and others continue to affect every aspect of the horse industry. The cost of these diseases is difficult, if not impossible to quantify, in terms of fatality rates, veterinary care, the effect on sales, breeding, racing, competitions, recreation, and the interstate and international movement of horses.

During his opening remarks, Dr. Jere Dick, Associate Deputy Administrator and Chief of Field Operations for USDA-APHIS-Veterinary Services said, "This workshop is a unique opportunity to bring together diverse segments of the equine industry to discuss how to address preparedness for, and response to, equine infectious diseases in this country...and to identify priorities related to equine infectious diseases, to explore the critical support functions that could be performed by each segment of the industry, and to discuss funding issues."

American Farrier's Association and Kentucky Equine Research Announce Educational Partnership

The American Farrier's Association (AFA) and Kentucky Equine Research (KER) both were founded on the common goals of education, innovation, and research. In an effort to work more closely and bring more resources to bear for AFA members and the horse industry, AFA and KER are announcing their official Educational Partnership.

AFA and KER will work together to develop and provide educational resources for farriers and their clients.

"The AFA centers upon five foundational tenets, which reinforce our mission and drive all of our efforts and programs: education, certification, communication, research, and innovation," noted AFA President Eric Nygaard. "These five timeless tenets provide the basis for all AFA programs and serve as the focal points of the AFA, past and present."

KER recognizes and respects the critical role that farriers play in the ongoing care of the horse and the education of horse owners. "We know the AFA's five tenets and share a passion for excellence in these areas," noted KER President Joe Pagan, Ph.D. "As part of KER's mission, we strive to advance the industry's knowledge of equine nutrition and exercise physiology and apply this knowledge to produce healthier, more athletic horses."

KER will provide AFA with educational articles and resources from its editorial staff, equine nutritionists, and in-house veterinarian (who holds board certifications in internal medicine and equine practice) for use in AFA print and digital publications. KER will also make these resources available to individual AFA members with questions on nutritional care of horses.

Since 1971, the American Farrier's Association has focused on improving equine welfare through excellence in hoof care and farriery.
KER is a world-renowned nutrition and consultation company that works with feed manufacturers to develop horse feeds suited for the particular regions in which they are to be fed. Research efforts are the cornerstone of KER, and all scientific trials are directed by Joe Pagan, PhD, and carried out by a staff of equine nutritionists and support personnel. Conclusions drawn from these trials are used in the formulation of technologically advanced feeds.

In addition to its research endeavors, KER has a rich tradition of providing top-of-the-line feeds to the greatest equine athletes in the world. In 2000, the company was tapped to be the official nutritionist of the United States Equestrian Federation and holds the same distinction for the Australian Equestrian Team.

Videos and articles on the diagnosis and management of joint disease in sport horses are now available on ker.com. Colorado State University's Dr. Wayne McIlwraith presented on these topics at the recent Kentucky Equine Research (KER) Equine Nutrition Conference.

Early recognition of joint disease is critical for both short-term and long-term soundness, McIlwraith noted. When it comes to treatment of osteoarthritis, the goal is to return the joint to normal as quickly as possible, primarily by reducing the pain and minimizing the progression of joint deterioration.

The Horse Radio Network and the United States Para Equestrian Association will host the first ever Para-Webathon on June 8, 2010, from 7 to 9:00 p.m. (Eastern). The purpose is to raise money and awareness for the United States Para-Equestrian athletes who are aiming to compete in the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. All monies will be channeled through the United States Para Equestrian Association to offset the costs of the 10 athletes and horses representing the United States.

The Para-Webathon will be a live web-based video event viewed just like on television. Watch the event.

The 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games will be the first WEG to offer Para-Equestrian competition. This is a very exciting addition that brings Para-Equestrian to the forefront of the horse world. Unfortunately, the Para teams do not have the resources or sponsors that the other disciplines enjoy. Kentucky Equine Research (KER) will host the athletes and horses of the U.S. Para-Dressage team at its Versailles, Ky., corporate headquarters and research farm prior to the Games (Read more).

Hosts Glenn the Geek and Samantha Clark, from the Horse Radio Network's 2010 Radio Show, and Para-Equestrian Susan Treabess will highlight the stories of these inspirational athletes who are aiming to compete at their first World Championships. Alltech has kindly donated its studio and technical expertise to host this live event from its studio in Kentucky. Equestrian stars from across the horse world will be calling in to lend their support and make this a very special event.

Watch, participate, and donate on June 8, 2010, from 7 to 9:00 p.m. (Eastern). You can help be a part of history as the Para Equestrians make their first appearance at a World Equestrian Games.

The filly came from last place, weaving her way through the pack and then squeezing along the rail to upset second-place finisher Meeznah by a neck. Winning time for the 12-furlong turf race was 2:35.77. Saracen Feeds, a Kentucky Equine Research Team Member, is the feed producer of choice for Ed Dunlop, trainer of Snow Fairy, as well as Meeznah's trainer David Lanigan.
Belmont Winner Drosselmeyer Fed by KER Team Member Hallway Feeds

Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer has a double connection to Kentucky Equine Research (KER) and its Team Member Hallway Feeds.

Drosselmeyer was fed on KER-formulated feeds produced by Hallway Feeds as a young horse at WinStar Farm, and was trained by Bill Mott on Hallway products during his preparation for the Belmont Stakes.

The $1 million Belmont, longest of the Triple Crown races at a mile and a half, requires a horse to be in top condition to finish the longest contest of its young racing career. Drosselmeyer's win boosted his earnings to $801,170 and gave him a record of three wins in nine starts.

The victory also resulted in WinStar Farm being named Thoroughbred Times Today Owner of the Week. Hallway Feeds is connected to the winners of all three legs of this year's Triple Crown, fueling Preakness winner Lookin At Lucky to his win, while Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver (also a WinStar horse) was raised on their feeds.

Kentucky Equine Research Nutrition Experts Explain Feed Balancer Pellets

Equine nutritionists Dr. Peter Huntington and Dr. Kathleen Crandell of Kentucky Equine Research have co-authored an article explaining the use of feed balancer pellets. The article, published in the June 2010 newsletter New Zealand Equine Veterinary Practitioner, detailed the makeup of a feed balancer pellet and listed benefits of using this product. Balancer pellets are formulated to provide nutrients that are missing in whatever forage is being consumed by a horse. This feed form supplies protein, vitamins, and minerals without significantly increasing the energy segment of the horse's diet.
