As regenerative medicine finds its footing and knowledge of its use increases, more options have become available for owners of arthritic horses. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), for example, offers new hope for this extremely common and debilitating condition.

Platelets contain granules that, when injected into a joint, release a slew of anti-inflammatory mediators and growth factors believed to “enhance healing of musculoskeletal injuries and modulate progression of inflammatory processes, including osteoarthritis.”

“Ask your veterinarian about nutritional supplements and PRP to devise the best protocol to help manage your arthritic horse. Minimize their discomfort to allow optimal performance and maintain smooth, pain-free motion,” advised Whitehouse.

Kentucky Equine Research offers several research-driven joint supplements that support joint health, either prophylactically before any trauma or injury occurs or after degenerative changes have become noticeable,” said Catherine Whitehouse, M.S., an advisor for the research and consultation company.

These products include:

  • Synovate HA, designed to deliver high molecular weight sodium hyaluronate that helps prevent the loss of hyaluronic acid in joints.
  • KER-Flex, a powdered formula containing glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin sulfate to provide broad-spectrum joint support; and
  • EO-3, a potent marine-derived oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids valuable in performance horses either at risk of or already diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

In addition to the supplements listed above, Australian owners should look for Glucos-A-Flex, a blend of glucosamine hydrochloride, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, designed for optimal joint support.
