Three world-renowned equine nutritionists, including Joe Pagan, Ph.D., founder and president of Kentucky Equine Research, recently convened virtually as guests on the Balchem Real Science Exchange podcast. The theme of the podcast was “Recent Developments in Performance Horse Health and Nutrition.”

Pagan was joined on the podcast with Laurie Lawrence, Ph.D., a professor at the University of Kentucky, and Steve Jackson, Ph.D., founder of Bluegrass Equine Nutrition, a consulting company.

The hourlong podcast covers many topics, including a brief history of equine nutrition over the last 30 years and current trends in feed ingredients, forages, and feeding management.

The panel also covered the likelihood of a revision of Nutrition Requirements of Horses, the document periodically updated by the National Research Council, or whether, as Pagan suggests, focused consensus statements are more apropos in the future. Nutrient Requirements of Horses was last published in 2007, with Lawrence as chair of the project.

Another webinar featuring Pagan with nutrition of performance horses as the topic is available here.
