Eventers work hard to hone a feel for their horse’s speed and stamina on cross-country. Go too slow and you’ll end up with time penalties, but go too fast and you may wear out your horse before the finish flags come into view. Anna Loschiavo, a Kentucky Equine Research-sponsored eventer, recently started using the KER ClockIt™ app to track her horses’ fitness and fine-tune her feel for their speed, strength, and endurance.

“Using the KER ClockIt web app opens up my ability to analyze training sessions well beyond what the app does on a cellphone. I highly recommend anyone using the system to become familiar with the features on the web app,” Anna says. One of Anna’s favorite features is Trend Selections. Reports generated from Trend Selections allow users to mark intervals within individual sessions to be compared against similar intervals from other sessions.

“Using Trend Selection Segments, I divide my gallops into three intervals per session. ClockIt compares the intervals across the selected sessions. I can then compare average heart rate, speed, meters galloped, and the standard deviation of speed and heart rate. Over the selected sessions, I could see that Spartacus Q’s average heart rate across all three intervals was about 10-12 bpm lower than the first gallop session,” Anna explained.

She continued, “When I came into the barn after Spartacus Q’s most recent gallop, I told everyone how wonderful he felt and how it was the best he has ever galloped, with the proof to back up my assertion.”

Spartacus Q is preparing for the Jersey Fresh CCI4*-L in May, and Anna will be tracking his daily work and gallops leading up to the event, continuing to gather valuable data about her training program.

In addition to the app, Anna also feeds her horses new Nano-Q10™ to help her speed recovery between workouts. Nano-Q10 is a highly bioavailable form of coenzyme Q10, a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from the damaging effects of free radicals and energizes other antioxidants in the body, like vitamins C and E.
