Proper storage and handling of vaccines for equine use is important in maintaining potency, ensuring efficacy, and minimizing adverse reactions after administration. Check directions on the bottle or box and follow guidelines when the vaccines are transported or stored. For vaccines that are to be refrigerated, even short periods of exposure to high temperatures can be harmful. Most vaccines also need to be protected from exposure to ultraviolet light.

To transport vaccines, use a cooler with cold packs and a tight-fitting lid. As soon as possible, move the vaccine to a refrigerator, preferably storing bottles in the central compartment rather than on a door rack. Check expiration dates and dispose of outdated vaccines that may have lost strength. It is recommended to have all equine vaccinations administered by a veterinarian.
