Kentucky Equine Research hosted its 27th Equine Health and Nutrition Conference on February 5 and 6 in Ocala, Florida. With world-renowned speakers on tap to speak about current topics, the conference attracted over 200 delegates from six continents.

The conference featured 16 scientific presentations that covered many important topics, including respiratory and cardiovascular physiology, muscle disorders and their genetic basis, management of glandular gastric ulcers, thermoregulation, and exercise conditioning. “The wide scope of topics presented was a conscientious decision to make the conference content relevant to a wide swath of individuals, from researchers and veterinarians to key figures in the feed-manufacturing industry,” said Eileen Phethean, chief operating officer at Kentucky Equine Research.

The roll call of expert speakers and their topics drew the desired audience with representation from 19 countries.

Polly Bonnor, director of Thoroughbred nutrition at Saracen Horse Feeds, a longtime feed-manufacturing partner of Kentucky Equine Research based in southeastern England, said, “My brain is filled with the most exciting bits of information that I can take home to my clients and to the rest of the Saracen team. The lineup of speakers has been incredible and the amount of detail we have to take home is unbelievable. I’m very happy to have been able to attend this year’s conference with members of my team.”

Other attendees included active researchers from academia. Shannon Pratt Phillips, Ph.D., professor of animal science at North Carolina State University, attended the conference. “I feel confident sharing the most up-to-date information with my students in equine science and nutrition. The conference was a wonderful networking event, and it was great to see colleagues from around the globe who had also come to learn from the best.”

Nettie Liburt, an independent equine nutritionist, provided a five-star review, “The Kentucky Equine Research conference in Ocala had outstanding content from some of the leading global researchers in equine exercise physiology and nutrition. The latest innovations in exercise research are exciting and already yielding some promising data to help us understand how to better monitor and care for equine athletes. It was also an excellent opportunity to reconnect with friends and colleagues as well as a perfect venue to network and meet some new ones. It was the best conference I’ve been to recently!”
