Kentucky Equine Research recently returned from the 69th American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Convention, held November 29 through December 3, at the San Diego Convention Center.

According to the AAEP website, the convention is the world’s largest continuing education event for veterinarians devoted to equine practice and features over 100 hours of continuing education, presentations on the latest in equine research, and a trade show featuring the latest products and services in the equine veterinary industry.

In addition to a well-attended trade fair booth that played on the “Catch the Wave” theme of the conference, the founder and president of Kentucky Equine Research, Joe Pagan, Ph.D., presented the results of a recent growth study. The presentation, titled “Factors Affecting Body Size and the Incidence of Skeletal Disease in Thoroughbred Foals,” builds on decades of growth studies completed by Kentucky Equine Research and its feed-manufacturing partners, and features data collected from Gro-Trac, equine growth-monitoring software.

Take a look at all of the recently published research completed by Kentucky Equine Research.

Stephanie Valberg, D.V.M., Ph.D., a longtime collaborator of Kentucky Equine Research, presented a talk titled “How to Diagnose Muscle Diseases That Impact Performance.” In that talk, she mentioned horses with myofibrillar myopathy, a disease in which horses express exercise intolerance and occasional episodes of tying-up. Clinical signs can be so severe they derail a performance horse completely. In her presentation, Valberg underscored the effectiveness of MFM Pellet, a supplement designed especially for these horses, by providing several case studies of horses becoming free of all clinical signs associated with the disease. This presentation piqued the interest of many veterinarians, and several requested more information on MFM Pellet.

The AAEP Convention is one of several places where Kentucky Equine Research regularly presents results from its scientific studies. Kentucky Equine Research often contributes to the Equine Science Society and International Conference on Equine Exercise Physiology meetings.

This February, Kentucky Equine Research will host the 27th Equine Health and Nutrition Conference, presented by Kentucky Equine Research, to be held February 5-6, 2024, in Ocala, Florida. This conference will feature world-renowned speakers and the latest advances in several fields of veterinary and nutrition science, and will detail how these findings can be applied to modern equine athletes.

The two-day scientific symposium is intended for veterinarians, researchers, and nutritionists, and features a roster of world-renowned speakers, each presenting cutting-edge information about performance horse health.
