Research Intern

Alexa Arredondo Razo

Alexa Arredondo Razo is a 2023-2024 Research Intern from Texas. Alexa recently earned a bachelor’s degree from Midway University, where she majored in biology and equine studies, with concentrations in equine science and equine rehabilitation and healthcare, and a minor in chemistry.

Alexa has a lot of family ties to the equine industry. Her grandfather is a Pan American Games silver medalist and competed in the Olympic Games in show jumping, her grandmother is an international hunter/jumper judge, and her uncle trains dressage and working equitation horses. With these connections, Alexa has been riding horses since she was four years old. She also volunteered at a donkey, mule, and horse rescue as well as an equine hospital in Texas.

Alexa chose to attend college in Kentucky, the “horse capital of the world,” to gain experience in all different aspects of the equine industry. While in college, Alexa has worked at KESMARC, an equine therapy center, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, and Coolmore Ashford Stud. She also shadowed several equine bodywork professionals. These experiences peaked Alexa’s interest in equine exercise physiology, and she is excited to gain more insight into the inner workings of equine nutrition and exercise physiology research during her internship at Kentucky Equine Research! She hopes to better understand how nutrition and exercise a horse’s health and work to find solutions to improving equine health and wellbeing through research. After completing her internship, Alexa has plans to apply to veterinary school.
