Novel Expression of GLUT3, GLUT6 and GLUT10 in Equine Gluteal Muscle Following Glycogen-Depleting Exercise: Impact of Dietary Starch and Fat

Horses have a slow rate of muscle glycogen repletion relative to other species for unknown reasons. Our aim was to determine the expression of glucose transporters (GLUT) and genes impacting GLUT4 expression and translocation in the gluteal muscle. Five fit Thoroughbred horses performed glycogen-depleting exercises on high-starch (HS, 2869 g starch/day) and low-starch, highfat diets […]

Nutrition of the Performance Horse

Kentucky Equine Research has created a free 90-page guide titled Nutrition of the Performance Horse that broadly covers the best ways to manage equine athletes, regardless of discipline, and includes practical management strategies and effective solutions for nutrition-related problems. In-depth discussions are also included regarding common issues such as gastric ulcers, hindgut acidosis, joint care, […]

Race Training Improves Skeletal Muscle Mitochondrial Volume Density, Function, and Capacity in Thoroughbreds

Racehorses are among the most elite athletes in the equine industry. However, little is known about mitochondrial adaptations to race training. To test the hypothesis that race training increases mitochondrial biogenesis and capacity, gluteus medius samples were collected from Thoroughbred horses (11 geldings, 2 mares) before and after 14 wk of early race training. Horses […]

Heart Rates at the Trot on a Mechanical Walker Are Correlated to Cardiovascular Fitness in Thoroughbred Racehorses

The relationship between heart rate (HR) and velocity under saddle or on a treadmill can be used to estimate cardiovascular fitness in horses. Whether HR data gathered during other types of exercise can be used to estimate fitness is unknown. This study hypothesized that HR data collected on a mechanical walker could be used to […]

Feeding Performance Horses with Myopathies

In combination with exercise, nutrition is an essential component of managing horses with myopathies. The optimal feeding program for an individual is tailored to the diagnosis of a specific underlying myopathy. Exertional myopathies are defined by muscle pain and impaired performance during or after exercise. Exertional rhabdomyolysis (ER) represents a subset of exertional myopathies characterized […]

Heart Rate, Speed and Lactate During the Cross-Country Phase of an Advanced and CCI*** Three-Day Event

Performance in three-day event horses is influenced by the horse’s innate ability combined with its level of fitness. Heart rate (HR) and blood lactate have been routinely measured in laboratory settings to evaluate fitness and/or ability in horses. To investigate whether these measurements are useful in assessing performance during competition, 11 horses competing at the […]

The Effect of Long-Chain Omega-3 Supplementation on Blood Serum Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) Levels and Inflammation Post-Exercise in Thoroughbred Racehorses

Horses supplemented with EO-3™ had significantly lower (p<0.05) GGT levels 2 and 4 hours post-exercise compared to the control horses. This may have resulted from a reduction in inflammation observed post-exercise in the horses fed EO-3. Open Technical Bulletin

Mineral and Vitamin Supplementation Including Marine-Derived Calcium Increases Bone Density in Thoroughbreds

Bone quality is important for the long-term health and soundness of performance horses. In racehorses, insufficient bone density is associated with shin soreness, an important cause of lost training time and reduced starts, as well as other aspects of bone fatigue. Risks of injury during training are associated with insufficient bone density. Research has previously […]

Intensity and Distance of Exercise During Training in Advanced Three-day-event Horses and Thoroughbred Racehorses Assessed Using KER ClockIt Race Smartphone Applications

Joe D. Pagan1, Emma Mulvey1, Kathleen O’Neill1, Natalie Ireland1 and Mike Davies2, 1Kentucky Equine Research, Versailles, Kentucky, USA; 2ClockItEQ, Ltd., Perth, Western Australia Nutrient requirements for performance horses are dependent on the intensity and duration of exercise during training and competition. Differences between racehorses and upper-level event horses have not been previously defined. This study […]
